In this video tutorial we go through the entire process of the 3D matte painting workflow. I begin with designing a composition and then get into creating a mood through lighting design. We then go into the modeling process covering how to model the scene keeping in mind that texturing painting will help us achieve most of our look so we don’t over-model our scene unnecessarily. We’ll then go into scene layout and blocking in our scene using our concept as a guide. Creating all our elements and populating the scene with vegetation, people, props and lights. We’ll cover Vray shaders, setting up our lights, creating water, fog and atmosphere and finally rendering out passes that we will use to bring our painting to final, giving us full control of every aspect of the painting.

In this piece a kitbash set was created and used to create different sci-fi building features, structures, piping, and set dressing. Fully 3D environment includes modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering done in 3D max, with several different render passes used to comp and complete the final shot. Learn how to create kitbash sets that you can use in various combinations to create multiple structures and add scale, detail and realistic complexity in your environments. Learn how to create realistic volumetric lighting and atmospheric fog to add depth and interest in your scenes.

3D Environment | 3D Max | Vray

The goal of this project was to create a full photo real 3D environment with a big epic fly through camera move of an old fantasy city. We designed the whole project, from camera moves to city structures and streets to grand palaces and rivers bustling with boat traffic. We modeled the city with great detail right down to street vendors and populated it with the people that live there. We wanted to push the limits and create a full 3D environment shot that would be believable and as close to photo real as possible with the time constraints we had and create something you would expect to see in a feature film.
